After just one season on the sidelines at Harlan, Tommy Hensley has decided to step down as head coach of the school's boys basketball program.

"It was a very difficult decision. It was hard telling the administration and the boys that I wasn't coming back. It really enjoyed my time at Harlan. I thought the kids gave a very good effort, and I am going to miss coaching them," Hensley said.

Hensley, a 1987 James A. Cawood High School graduate, accepted the position last season after serving as an assistant girls basketball coach at Calvary Day School in Savannah, Ga. During his first season as coach, Hensley's wife and daughter stayed in Savannah, and Hensley cited that as the reason for his resignation.

"For family reasons it is just best for me to go back to Savannah to them," he said.

In his only year at Harlan, Hensley's squad posted an 8-18 record and exceeded the expectations of many.

"We thought he had done a good job and was looking forward to the future. It was a family decision and he is having to do what is best for them," said Harlan Athletic Director Kevin Ball.

Ball said the search for a new coach will begin immediately.

"We have already put out there that it is available. I have gotten three or four inquiries already (Thursday). We are early in the process now, but we would like to move quickly because of summer coming up," he said.

Despite the graduation of leading scorer Chris Begley, the Dragons return what should be an improved roster.

"We have been fortunate over the years to have good coaches and a good program. I think the program is in good shape at this point, but the future definitely looks good," Ball said. "We have a good middle school program. We have had a lot of consistency there, and I think the future looks really good."
