He and his family moved to Oak Ridge in 1959 when he began working for the Associates Financial Co., as branch manager until his retirement in 1993. He turned down several promotions in his years with the Associates to stay and raise his family in Oak Ridge. He came out of retirement to work with is son, Kent Hughes at Southern Financial Inc. until 1999 and later began working at TNBank in Oak Ridge for several more years.
He was involved in the early years of the Oak Ridge Boys Club where he coached many kids in various sports. He loved to play softball and played well into his late 50’s with many leagues. Mr. Hughes was also involved in numerous civic and service organizations in Oak Ridge. He was a long-time member, deacon and former board member of First Baptist Church. He was very family oriented and was considered the patriarch of the Hughes family. He took great pride in mentoring and providing endless support and love for all of his family. He enjoyed fishing and water sports and especially enjoyed family outings to the lake and the beach.
In additional to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Donald Ray Hughes, Jr., March 9, 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Lou Smith Hughes. They would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on August 13th. He is also survived by son, Kent Hughes and wife Toni of Oak Ridge; brother, James Doyle Hughes and wife Ellen Dee Hughes of Kenvir; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 12-2pm at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge. The funeral will begin at 2pm with Rev. Tim Borchert officiating. The burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to First Baptist Church and the Agape Center at 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
