Staff Report

With Independence Day coming up this week, state and city police want to warn locals that they will be on high alert.

Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs says the Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays for the state. He added there will be periodic traffic safety check points all over Harlan, Bell and Knox counties.

Jacobs said the main focus this time of year will be DUI, speeding, insurance and registration violations along with the proper use of seat belts and child restraints.

The Kentucky State Police want to remind everyone to take their time and be cautious. Always have a sober driver because it’s just not worth the risk.

Jacobs said it is very important to take your time and be cautious because Independence Day is one of the most dangerous holidays of the year.
