The Harlan County Lady Bears opened the volleyball season with a straight set victory over visiting Lynn Camp on Tuesday. Harlan County defeated Lynn Camp 25-18, 25-15 in the two sets.
Breanna Dunson had three tips, two blocks, two digs, one kill and two spikes to pace the Lady Bears in the first set. Rebecca Eldridge contributed two tips, one spike and nine service points. Cara Middleton recorded three tips, two digs and three points. Whitney Stevens tallied one dig, five spikes and five points. Chyanna Harris had one tip and one spike, and Keisha Mimes added one spike.
Middleton led the Lady Bears with two tips, one dig, one kill, three spikes and two points in the final set. Eldridge had two spikes and six service points. Harris recorded one tip, one spike and two points. Mimes contributed two tips, three spikes and three points. Stevens had one kill and three service points, and Dunson added one tip and one point.
“I’m really proud of the girls. They have been working really good together,” said Harlan County coach Donna Vicini. “They are getting along and working great as a team. We had some first game jitters, but think the girls are going to do well this year.”
After dropping the first game 26-24, the Lady Bears responded with dominant wins the the final two sets to claim the win in junior varsity action. Harlan County defeated Lynn Camp 21-5 in the second set, before finishing off the Lady Cats 21-8 in the final game.
Tarolyn Burkhart had two spikes, one ace and 13 service points in the three sets to help lead Harlan County to the win. Sasha Simpson added one ace, one spike and seven points. Lauren Lee recorded seven tips, one dig, three spikes, five points and one ace. Charleigh Mefford tallied four digs, three spikes and 11 points. Megan Cornett had two points and one dig, and Brittany Clem added 10 tips, one ace, one dig, two spikes and three point.
