Harlan man arrested for arson

The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man for his alleged connection with a fire at 305 East Central Street in Harlan on Thursday. The building is home to the Asher Law Office as well as residential apartments.

The Harlan City Fire Department, Sunshine Fire Department, Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, Harlan City Police and Harlan EMS responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Mark May, 63, of Harlan, was arrested by sheriff’s deputy Mitch Alford at 10:15 p.m. and charged with first-degree arson and second-degree disorderly conduct.

According to Harlan County Sheriff Marvin Lipfird, May is not the renter, but is an occupant of the apartment where the fire was started.
