The Harlan County High School JROTC Raider Team traveled to Middlesboro High School to compete in their Raider Competition on Sept. 15. They competed against Thomas Walker High School in Virginia, Campbell County High School in Tennessee, Knox Central High School, Corbin High School, Whitley County High School, and Clay County High School.

Cadet Capt. Bridget Green led the Color Guard to a first place trophy. Green is in her first year commanding the Color Guard. Cadet Command Sgt. Maj. Doug Brashears, who is the Raider Team Commander, led the Raider team to a first place finish in the Land Navigation competition. Cadet Maj. Josh S. Kelly and Cadet Master Sgt. Alex Farmer lead the Raider team to a first place finish with brute strength in the male tug-of-war contest. Cadet Maj. Josh Anderson led the Raider team to a second place finish in the relay event. Cadet Lt. Col. David Sumpter led the Raider Team to a third place finish in the one rope bridge event. This was the first Raider Competition of the year for the Harlan County JROTC Raider Team. Their next scheduled competition is at Whitley County High School on October 20.

Army Instructor, 1st Sgt. Sonny Long was most impressed with the color guard. Having a first year Color Guard commander is challenging, and they managed to finish in first place. This is the first time that our Color Guard has ever won first place in competition. Despite what most people believe tug-o-war is not only a test of strength it also tests team work and technique which are two very important things we teach the cadets on the raider team. Senior Army Instructor, Maj. McElyea was very pleased with the overall performance of the whole Raider Team and believes there will be much more success for this team this year.

The one rope bridge consisted of eight cadets: David Sumpter, Perry Saylor, Taylor Stephens, Jason Coots, Trevor Tackett, Doug Brashears, Cassondra Fields and Josh Anderson. Tug-O-War consisted of 10 male cadets: Joshua S. Kelly, Billy Cochran, and Joshua Anderson, Austin Southerland, Alex Farmer, John Saylor, Trevor Tackett, David Sumpter, Joshua L. Kelly and Devon Elliott. The compass course consisted of four cadets: Doug Brashears, David Sumpter, Chad Richmond and Jason Coots. The Big Ball Relay consisted of six cadets: Josh Anderson, Josh Roark, Sidney Thacker, Cassondra Fields, Taylor Stephens, and Caleb Johnson. The Color Guard consisted of four cadets: Bridgett Green, Joshua L. Kelly, Haley Nix and Steven Holbrook.

JROTC Raider Teams across the country perform physical and technical skills at both the individual and team levels. They perform tasks that may be found in a conventional Army unit such as the Physical Fitness Test, 5Km Runs, Rope Bridges, Land Navigation Courses, First Aid Litter Carry, Cross Country Rescue, Orienteering, 5km Foot March and academic competitions.
