After receiving an additional 250 tons of road salt recently, the county will have approximately 550 tons on hand for the upcoming winter months. Harlan County Road Department Supervisor Marvin Goins said the new salt cost approximately $84.48 per ton. He said 400 tons were used last winter — a mild winter. However, in the winter of 2010, which saw a lot more snow and ice, some 1,400 tons of salt were used on county roads.
