Coty Miracle is a bright spot along the Bears’ defensive line, but the Harlan County senior is perhaps most important for the light he shines off of the gridiron. A devout Christian and active member of First Priority, Miracle serves as a positive influence to his teammates.

“I got saved on July 26, and it has played a huge role in my life. I really try to shine a light to the other players on the team,” Miracle said. “I try to lead as an example and motivate the team in a positive way.”

A football field often isn’t an environment often associated with someone of the Christian faith, but Miracle said he is grateful for the opportunity to experience both.

“It’s a different mix. You usually don’t associate Christianity with football. Usually, the football atmosphere is rough for Christians,” he said. “It’s great to be able to do both.”

Harlan County’s Tom Larkey said Miracle’s faith and dependability make him a pleasure to coach.

“I like players you can count on in the school and the community, and he is one you never have to worry about,” he said. “Coty is very coachable and a very good person. He does the right things. That character really pays off in games.”

On the football field, Miracle is a playmaker for the Bears on the interior of the defensive line. Although he may be undersized at defensive tackle, Miracle’s combination of athleticism, strength and intelligence make him a reliable force in the middle.

“Coty is a multiple sport guy who runs track. He is a strong and quick kid,” Larkey said. “You have to be a very intelligent to play our defense. There are several reads you have to make. You have got to look for three or four things when you line up and make quick decisions. All of those things play a big factor.”

Miracle is currently seventh on the team, with 50 tackles this season. He has also recovered a fumble for the Black Bears.

“Being on the defensive line, I am smaller than most people, but I am quick and able to get down the line and make plays,” Miracle said.

Miracle and the Black Bears will host Pulaski County in the regional championship on Friday.
