Powell Howard 80, of Wallins passed away Friday, November 23, 2012 at his residence. He was a native of Harlan County and worked as a school teacher for Bell County High School. A retired veteran, he served over 30 years in the Army and Air Force. He was also a member of the Wallins Masonic Lodge #666 and believed in the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ruth Howard; his parents, Ewell Howard and Mary Ball Howard; one daughter, Barbara Howard; his step-father, William “Mutt” Kelly; two brothers, Ernest Howard and Vernice Howard.

Powell is survived by three sons, Mason Howard and wife Ruth, Wallins; William Howard and wife Elmeda, Sweetwater, TN; and Bryon Howard, Corbin; and one sister, Virginia Hensley, Morristown, TN.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren including a special grandson, Rodney Howard and wife Kayla.

Many thanks to Hospice of the Bluegrass with a very, very special thanks to Jim Garrett for the comfort and compassion to the family.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 P.M. Tuesday, November 27, 2012 in the New Creech Cemetery, at Wallins with Reverend Freeman Clark officiating.

Military rites will be performed by the Harlan Honor Guard at the cemetery.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
