Alex Caldwell, age 89 of Bledsoe, KY passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Hazard, KY. He was born October 24, 1923 in Leslie County, KY. Alex lived in Bledsoe most of his life. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He worked for U.S. Steel as a coal miner and was a member of the U.M.W.A. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Gathel Caldwell; his mother, Alice C. Mallott and father Farmer Caldwell; three brothers, Will, Charlie, and Wright Caldwell; five sisters, Judy Noe, Goldie Simpson, Dorothy Shirley, Toni Hall, and Docia Brock.

Survivors include one son, Ronnie Caldwell and wife Leola of Bledsoe, KY; one grandson, Douglas Caldwell and wife Tia of Bledsoe, KY; one great grandson, Carter Douglas Caldwell of Bledsoe, KY; one brother, Hirm Caldwell of Fort Wayne, IN. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Coldiron, Rev. Clifton Caldwell, and Rev. Lonnie Saylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Caldwell Cemetery in Bledsoe, KY. Vic Caldwell, Clifton Caldwell, Doug Caldwell, Larry Fultz, Kale Saylor, Jr., and Lonnie Saylor will serve as pallbearers. Military rites will be observed by the Harlan County Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
