An Enterprise Staff Report

Harlan County’s post South Carolina struggles continued Saturday, as the Black Bears fell 60-54 to Lincoln County in the Dunkin Donuts Classic at Lexington Catholic. After capturing the Hilton Head Classic title, the Black Bears are just 3-2, and were nearly upset by Highlands and Pikeville.

The Patriots took control early, building a 17-12 lead in the first quarter. Harlan County battled back in the second quarter and tied the game at 22. Senior Tyler Brewer reeled off six straight points in a 9-0 run capped by a three-point play from fellow senior Chad Massingill to pull the Bears even.

Massingill scored 21 to lead the Bears., while Brewer and Alex Sergent added 10 each.

Just as the Bears appeared to capture the momentum, Lincoln County answered with a 10-4 run to close the half and take a 32-26 advantage into the break.

Lincoln cooled off in the second half, hitting only two of 10 shots as HCHS twice took the lead, first on a 3-pointer by Sergent, then on a basket by Massingill with 3:20 left. The Bears didn’t score again in the period and a 3-pointer by Neil Lonley gave the Patriots a 39-36 advantage.

Lincoln’s lead grew to eight midway through the fourth quarter before the Harlan County defense turned the game. James Bond and Cody Bumgardner came off the bench for baskets as the Bears cut the deficit to 48-46. Bond missed two free throws that could have tied the game and Lincoln pulled away again by hitting 10 of 12 at the line over the final 2:32.

The Patriots put the game away at the free throw line, hitting 22 of 28 for the game. The Patriots’ last 15 points came at the free throw line.

Harlan County (14-2) will return to action Wednesday in the WYMT Mountain Classic against Hazard at Perry Central. Lincoln County (7-9) will travel to Pulaski County on Tuesday.
