According to a National Weather Service alert issued on Wednesday for Harlan County, a river flood advisory is in effect until 3:42 p.m. Saturday.
The alert said the flood advisory continues for the Cumberland River at Baxter. At 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the stage was estimated at 11.7 feet. The advisory also said on Wednesday the bank-full stage was 14 feet and flood stage is 16 feet.
The alert continued by saying, the river will rise to near 13.5 feet today.
Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill said flash flooding was reported in Cumberland on Tuesday. He said the Tri-City Rescue Squad “did some sandbagging to keep water out of the basement of one residence.”
“We have reports of water standing in the roadway at Highsplint, Louellen and on KY 72 in Catrons Creek,” said McGill. “Everyone needs to take precaution, watching the roadway for high water and water standing in the roadways.”
McGill said with the large amount of rain received in the county, everyone should be on the lookout for mudslides, especially during the evening hours.
“We live in a mountainous area and when the ground gets saturated with water, especially with our temperatures going from cold to warm, this will make it more prone for mudslides,” said McGill. “We will be monitoring flood waters and mudslides across the county through the duration of this event. We have a Facebook page where information is being placed on conditions throughout the county. If anything eminent or life threatening comes up we will be notifying residents through our CodeRED call out system and local media.”
