Board approves construction projects

Upon the recommendation of Superintendent David Johnson, approval was granted by members of the Harlan Independent Board of Education at a recent meeting to begin the BG-1 process of a proposed construction project.

The construction project includes work being done at the Harlan Elementary School, which will consist of replacement of interior and exterior doors, provision for ADA (handicap) access to the front of the building and an entrance canopy as an alternate, totalling $246,326.

Also approved were renovations to the elementary school cafeteria to make it “a functional kitchen.”

The board committed $100,000 to the field-house project, using 2014 construction and capital outlay funds. An agreement with GRW Inc. to perform architectural services for the elementary, middle/high schools and field-house projects was also approved.

Whenever a school construction application is made, the board must submit a BG-1 form to the Kentucky Department of Education’s Division of Facilities Management for approval of the proposed project.

In other board action:

*Joe Meadors was approved as chairman of the board;

*Matt Nunez was approved as vice chairman;

*Linda Shope was approved as board secretary;

*Darlene Lester was approved as treasurer;

*Johnson was approved as assistant board secretary;

*The board members set their meeting date for 2013 for the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room of the Community Learning Center;

*Approved an agreement with CRW Inc. to perform a facilities survey as needed for the district facility plan;

* Hired Jennifer Hilton and Briand Baird as substitute teachers;

*Approved a contract amendment with he Harlan County Health Department.

There will be a special called meeting of the Harlan Independent Board of Education on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
