Fifteen students from the Harlan Independent School participated in the Southeastern Kentucky Music Association’s All-Festival Choir in London. Fourteen schools were represented in the choral festival.

Raye Hurley was the SSA All-Festival Conductor. Hurley, a native of Hazard, is in her 10th year as choir director at Franklin County High School in the state capital. Her top choir, Choristers, was invited to sing at the American Cathedral in Paris, France this summer. After the initial invitation to sing at the American Cathedral, the choir has since been invited to sing at the Vatican in Rome.

Musettes that performed in the 58 member SSA choir were Mya Bowen, Dominique Dupar, Elizabeth Johnson, Kaylee McNiel and and Alyssa Mills.

The SATB Choir, composed of 120 students, was directed by Dr. Greg Detweiler. He is in his fifteenth year as the Director of Choral Studies at Morehead State University. The MSU Chamber Singers recently won their division with the gold diploma at the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is in demand as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor.

Boys Choir members participating in the SATB Choir were Stephen Jones, Dylan McNiel, Dakota Morris, Taylor Ragg, Jared Sizemore and Jordan Turner. Musette members were Samantha Henson, Lauren Hogue, Bethany James and Caroline Nelson.

Choral directors at Harlan Independent are Marybeth Christman and Marilyn Schraeder. Schraeder was the piano accompanist for the SATB choir.
