The Harlan County Farm Bureau hosted the organization’s annual tree giveaway Tuesday in the parking lot of the Farm Bureau office on Walnut Street.

Harlan County Farm Bureau Secretary Nathan Boggs said the event is an added benefit to members in the area.

Boggs pointed out that Farm Bureau Insurance Company is a benefit of being a member of the Harlan County Farm Bureau rather than the other way around.

“The Harlan County Farm Bureau Federation is giving out trees to our members as an extra membership benefit,” said Boggs. “This is just something extra we do for our members.”

According to Boggs, it is not necessary to be a Farm Bureau member in order to take advantage of the tree giveaway.

“We give them out to anybody,” said Boggs. “We appreciate people’s business. We want people to know that Harlan County Farm Bureau is more than just an insurance company. We are a community service.”

Boggs said that Farm Bureau is responsible for a variety of educational programs.

“We do a lot of agricultural education in the elementary schools,” said Boggs. “We try to promote woodlands and forestry knowledge.”

Boggs said the primary agriculture in Harlan County is woodlands.

“Every year we try to take one elementary school out into the woods and teach them about forestry,” said Boggs. “We teach them about trees and timber stand management. Harlan County Farm Bureau is all about timber stand management, taking care of our trees and taking care of our properties so they will produce a good harvest.”

A variety of trees were given away during the event.

“We’re giving away hazelnut, mulberry, persimmon and paw paw,” said Boggs. “It seems like the paw paw is more popular.”

Boggs said the trees being given away are good for the wildlife in the area.

According to Boggs, Harlan County Farm Bureau President Don Miniard is responsible for the event.

“Giving the trees away is something the Farm Bureau board of directors wanted to do for their membership,” said Boggs. “We are all about helping our citizens.”
