The Harlan Lady Dragons secured their first win of the season with a 10-0 rout of Barbourville on Friday.

“We hope this turns things around. The girls seemed a lot more relaxed tonight,” said Harlan coach Scott Lewis. “They seemed like they had their feet under them a little tonight, so hop on right path.”

The Lady Dragons jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning.

Noe walked to start the offense. She stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Heather Holland reached first on a fielder’s choice that drove in Noe. Holland scored when Jourdan Ledford grounded out to short.

Harlan extended its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the third inning.

Noe reached base on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on passed balls. Anna Karst reached on an error that scored Noe. Madison Brewer followed with a single to drive in Karst.

The Lady Dragons put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth inning.

McNiel single. Kaitlin Jenkins reached on an error. Karst drove in both runners with a double. Holland followed with a single to bring in Karst. She later scored on an error. Brewer drew a walk and advanced on a Torri Mitchell single. Both runners scored on a McNiel single to right field.

Eight Lady Dragons collected hits in the six inning victory.

Karst and Alyssa Mills each recorded a double to power the offense. Noe, Holland, Brewer, Mitchell, McNiel and Kaitlin Jenkins each added a single.

“That is something we hope to be able to keep up,” Lewis said of the balanced offensive attack.

Noe recorded eight strikeouts, while allowing just two hits in the complete-game victory on the mound.

“She pitched really well tonight. She is one that caught her groove tonight,” Lewis said.

Harlan (1-2) returns to action today at home against Williamsburg. Barbourville (0-2) will host Corbin on Tuesday.

The Harlan Green Dragons edged Pineville 16-14 in their season opener on Thursday.

Pineville rallied with seven runs in the fifth inning to pull within two, at 13-11. A Ben Abraham homer pushed the lead to three, but Pineville scored three times in the seventh to force extra innings.

Harlan needed just one to reclaim the lead as Austin Miller, Dylan McNiel and Jordan Turbyfill drew walks to load the bases. Turbyfill had a sacrifice fly and Abraham added an RBI single.

Pineville threatened in the bottom of the eight with runners on first and second. McNiel ended the threat when he fielded a ground hit by Conner Ford, stepped on second and threw to first for the game-ending double play.

Abraham led the Harlan offense with three singles and a homer. Caleb Hogue and Miller had two singles each. Tye Patrick gave Harlan an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning. McNiel, Colby Wilson, Turbyfill and Corey Burns had one single each.

McNiel pitched four-plus innings and gave up nine runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Marshall Ward allowed one run on one hit as he faced three batters. Hogue earned the win by pitching the last four innings, giving up five runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Harlan (1-0) plays at Lynn Camp on Friday and opens its home schedule Saturday against Jenkins.
