Harlan County improved to 5-0 in junior varsity action with a dominant 44-6 victory over visiting Clay County on Monday.
“I am proud of this group. To go undefeated in the regular season is a pretty big accomplishment,” said Harlan County coach Eddie Creech.
Fred Massey opened the scoring with an 80-yard return on the opening kickoff. Zach Jenkins ran in the two-point conversion to put Harlan County up 8-0.
Hunter Lewis added to the lead with a 10-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Massey ran in the two-point conversion to stretch the lead to 16-0.
Following a Clay County touchdown, Jarret Ford connected with tight end Nick Cornett on a 24-yard touchdown pass. Massey’s two-point run made it 22-6 with 2:46 left in the second quarter.
On the next Clay County possession, a high snap on a punt resulted in a safety.
Devin Curry tacked on the final touchdown of the first half when he returned the ensuing kickoff 60-yards for a touchdown. The two-point pass attempt failed leaving the score at 30-6 at halftime.
J.T. Cabell recovered a fumble at Clay County’s 24 to set up the Bears’ next touchdown.
Ford quickly connected with Massey on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 8:33 left in the third quarter to push the lead to 36-6.
Curry closed the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run with 2:36 remaining in the third. Ford found Jake Howard on the two-point conversion.
“We are deep at a lot of positions, and have some kids that can come in and give us a breather,” Creech said. “The guys really play together as a team.”
With the win, the Black Bears moved to 4-0 in conference play. Harlan County will host a first round playoff game next Monday.
