A Loyall woman was arrested on a burglary charge by Loyall City Police on Monday. Megan Shepherd, 21, was served with a warrant charging her with third-degree complicity to commit burglary, theft by unlawful taking and first-degree criminal mischief.
According to Loyall City Police Chief Mike Lunsford, Shepherd was a co-defendant in the case in which she was charged, along with James Curtis Lewis, 23, of Loyall. The two allegedly acted together in a burglary.
“There’s a building down here (Loyall) called Acorns to Oaks. It used to be a furniture place on County Pike,” said Lunsford. “There was a witness who saw Megan watching outside while James Lewis entered the building.”
Lunsford said while Shepherd did not enter the building, she aided Lewis by acting as a lookout.
“On Oct. 21, she assisted and aided her boyfriend James Curtis Lewis while he entered the Acorn to Oaks building located on County Pike in Loyall owned by Steve Harris and took an estimated $5,000 in copper and did more than $1,000 damage to the building by taking the copper out,” said Lunsford.
Lunsford noted that Shepherd was arrested while she was attending Harlan District Court on an unrelated matter.
“Lewis had court on Monday. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled,” said Lunsford. “She showed up in court for his preliminary hearing. She was also there to take care of a bench warrant that had been issued on her. She had paperwork there, and when she appeared we just went ahead and executed the warrant. She had kind of disappeared down here and we weren’t able to locate her. But she showed up there so we just went ahead and arrested her at district court and took her to jail.”
Lunsford said Lewis was served a warrant in the Harlan County Detention Center for this case on Oct. 23. Lewis had been in jail since Oct. 21, having been arrested on another charge.
Lewis was charged with third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking and first-degree criminal mischief.
In other police activity, George Allen, 24, of Harlan, was arrested by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree arson and probation violation for felony offense. Allen was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
