The Harlan Green Dragon Cross Country teams have advanced two runners to the Kentucky State Cross Country meet at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington this coming weekend.
Sophomore Laura Pace, eighth-grader Andrew Mills, each qualified for the state meet for the first time, while coach Leo Miller will be returning after a 25 year hiatus.
“Laura and Andrew ran their personal bests by approximately two and one minutes respectively,” said Miller. “Ben (Jones) and Mason (Miller) ran well and just missed state after making it last year. This year’s field of runners were faster. We were just one runner away from qualifying a team to state. But we are rebuilding with three strong runners, and I expect region championships in the following years.”
Pace placed 11th with a 24:27 time. The girls’ race featured 28 runners.
In the boys’ race, Mills led the Dragons with an 18:44 time for seventh-place. Jones and Mason Miller finished with times of 19:07 and 19:27 for 11th and 13th places respectively. The boys’ race featured 46 runners.
“I’d rather have my runners get faster and not make state as to make state and be slower,” said Miller. “They are getting faster from last year and from when the season started. This is my youngest group of runners. They’re disappointed that they didn’t all qualify for the state meet, but they are improving and we will win region soon.”
Berea captured the boys team title, while Model won the girls meet. Mills was selected to the all-region team.
