The Harlan County Lady Bears resembled last year’s regional runner-up squad Monday, as they routed visiting Pineville 75-36 in a Southeastern Kentucky Conference Panorama.
Harlan County was dominant from the start and led 45-16 after two quarters. Freshman Brooklyn Massingill had 15 points in the first half to power the Lady Bears’ surge. Harlan County turned in an impressive performance on the defensive end, forcing the Lady Lions into numerous turnovers.
“When we were in our normal rotation there early I thought we played pretty well defensively. But, we have a long way to go,” Nolan said. “We didn’t always contain the ball. We got after it, but we played ourselves out of position sometimes and gave up penetration.”
Shannon Shackleford had a breakout performance with eight points in the post for the Lady Bears, while senior Sarah Evans four points in her return from off-season surgery. Keisha Mimes also had six points in the paint.
“With Sarah being out all summer, Shannon got all of that experience. She has that confidence now to take it in the varsity level,” Nolan said. “Sarah is probably healthier than she was all of last year. I thought she moved well after being off for a while.”
Harlan County opens the regular season Nov. 27 at home against Williamsburg, while Pineville will travel to Oneida Baptist.
