An Enterprise Staff Report

Harlan County’s Jake Middleton has put together one of the best season’s in school history in 2012, and the senior running back was rewarded for that performance recently as he was named the Class 5A District 8 Player of the Year.

“It is a pretty big honor. It feels like all of the hard work and determination has really paid off,” Middleton said. “I feel like we have accomplished a lot in a short period of time, and it really feels good to be a part of that and bring attention to our school.”

Leading the state’s top rushing attack, Middleton has amassed an astounding 2,090 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground this season.

On and off the football field, Middleton has helped to bring positive attention to the Harlan County football program.

“He not only has the stats to prove he is a great player, but he is just a great kid all the way around,” said Harlan County coach Tom Larkey. “He is very unselfish about the game and what his role is on the team. We are really happy for him.”

Middleton is the third straight Harlan County player to receive district player of the year honors. Jordan Calton received the award in 2010, and Marcus McMillian was the recipient last season.

“We are pretty honored to have somebody receive that award again this year,” Larkey said.

In addition to being named the District 8 Player of the Year, Middleton has also been selected to play in the National Guard Border Bowl between the Kentucky and Tennessee all-stars.
