A Cumberland man was shot and killed late Wednesday during what police said was a break in attempt at a home in the Gordon community of Letcher County.

According to Kentucky State Police at the Hazard post, Wayne Duff II, 37, of Cumberland, was shot at a residence which is located near the community’s fire department.

According a press release from KSP Post 13, police had received a call “stating someone was attempting to break into a residence in the Gordon community. Preliminary investigation indicates that the alleged perpetrator, Wayne Duff, was confronted by James Brown at the residence. A verbal altercation occurred between the two and threatening remarks were made toward Mr. Brown. Duff then began to approach Brown and Brown discharged a handgun toward Duff, striking him in the chest.”

Duff was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County coroner.

No charges had been filed at press time.

According to police, the case will be presented to the Letcher County Grand Jury.

Funeral arrangements for Duff were incomplete late Thursday at Tri-City Funeral Home in Benham.
