Harlan County teams claim wins

Both the Harlan County girls and boys picked up wins on Saturday.

The Black Bears opened the season with an 88-46 rout of Sullivan Central, Tenn., on Saturday.

Harlan County jumped out to a big lead thanks in parts to a suffocating defensive effort that forced the visiting Cougars into 25 turnovers.

The Bears featured a balanced offensive attack. led by 17 points from Chad Massingill. Tyler Brewer, Tyler Miller and Zach Caldwell each reached double figures in the win.

The Lady Bears improved to 2-0 with a 53-40 win over Pulaski County at McCreary Central.

Harlan County turned in an impressive effort on the defensive end of the floor against the 12th Region Lady Maroons. The Lady Bears limited Pulaski to just six points in the first quarter to take a four-point lead. Harlan County led 23-18 at the half, before outscoring the Lady Maroons by seven in the final two quarters.

Brooklyn Massingill powered the Lady Bears with 10 points.
