Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Howard is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on U.S. 421 at Cranks on Sunday.

According to Harlan County deputy coroner Jim Rich, Mary Helton, 49, of Cawood, died in the crash from blunt force trauma. She was a passenger in the vehicle.

Rich said Helton was a LPN at Tri-Cities Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

According to a KSP press release, Robert Blanton, 55, of Cawood, was operating a 2004 Dodge Neon on U.S. 421 when he lost control. The vehicle was traveling north and crossed the southbound lane before striking a concrete barrier on the shoulder. The passenger side of the vehicle received all the force of the impact as the vehicle struck the concrete in a T-bone fashion.

Helton was reported to be pinned inside the vehicle. She was removed by the Harlan County Rescue Squad after she was pronounced at the scene by Rich.

Blanton was transported by Harlan EMS to Harlan ARH Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by Howard. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Sgt. Jeremy Lee, and troopers Brandon Burton and Danny Caudill. Martins Fork Fire Department also assisted.
