Dewayne Williams was sworn in as the newest member of Loyall City Council on Monday.

Williams replaces Kenny Colinger, who chose not to run for re-election. Williams will begin his tenure in January.

“I’m really excited about being able to serve the city of Loyall,” said Williams. “I appreciate the fact the people thought enough of me to elect me to this position. It doesn’t matter if you voted for me or not, I will serve the residents of Loyall equally. I can’t wait to get started working with the mayor and council. I hope through my service and that of other council members, we can all see our city move forward in the year to come.”

Mayor Clarence Longworth commended councilman Kenny Colinger for his dedication to the city and council.

“Kenny has been with me for the past six years and I appreciate him for his service to the city,” said Longworth. “He’s been very dependable and I hope he continues to visit us during our council meetings.”

Colinger said he will still stay active in city affairs and, if for some reason the city needs his help, “I’ll be around to assist.”

Other council members sworn in for the coming year were Anne McFarland, Trenna Cornett, James Hagy, Dorothy Williams and Elvin Smith.

During the meeting, Longworth told council that beginning in January the city will have to renew the city’s garbage contract. He said bids will be received after the first of the year.

“I just wanted to remind everyone this is coming up. We’ll be advertising for bids in the newspaper and address this in our January meeting,” said Longworth. “We’ve not had any recent complaints on our present garbage collectors. If anyone has anything they want to change on our present garbage contract, just let me know so we can include it before we accept bids.”

Council members agreed they were satisfied with the garbage contract as it stands.

Water and Sewer Supervisor Mark Duff noted a $300 donation was received on Monday from the American Legion Post 336 for playground equipment. Longworth added the city recently purchased, through donations, a space shuttle and blue seal for the children to enjoy at the city park.

“Every pretty day I see kids and families out enjoying our city park,” said Longworth. “The more equipment we get in there, the more families can come to enjoy the park.”
