Staff report

After presentations from four architectural firms at a recent meeting of the Harlan Independent Board of Education, board members chose GRW Engineers, of Lexington, for their upcoming construction project at the Harlan Middle and Elementary schools.

“Jimmy Piper is the architect with GRW, who will be preparing the plans for us,” said Superintendent David Johnson.

Improvements, which were discussed in previous meetings, and including things such as cafeteria improvements, windows, doors and handicap accessibility to their elementary and middle school buildings will be part of the upcoming construction project.

Also during the meeting, board member Matt Nunez was chosen to serve on the school’s local planning committee. The local planning committee develops the school’s four year facility plan.

Chosen as the school’s student drug testing vendor was Forward Edge, of Lexington. Johnson said the tests will cost $20 per student.

“This was the low bid and we have used this company in the past,” said Johnson.

Other board actions included:

* Approval of the board’s consent agenda which included paying a bill to Extreme Design in the amount of $8,459.40;

*Approval of nonresident student contracts;

*Approval of amendment to 403 (b) plan;

*Approval of wellness report;

*Approval of substitute teacher.
