Seeking participation from the people and businesses of Harlan County, Producer Kim Childers of Kaci Productions in Owensboro, is currently in pre-production mode on a documentary based on Harlan County’s past and future involvement with coal. Full production is anticipated by March.

“My parents were born and raised in Harlan County,” said Childers. “I still have distant family living in the county as well. Ever since I was a child visiting my grandparents in Wallins Creek, I have had a love and fascination for the area. I think it’s an absolutely beautiful area with such a rich history that is found no where else in my book.”

Beginning from around 1900 to today, Childers plans to document mining and its effect on the county and residents, describing life through the good and bad times.

“We want to not only give the highlight to what the miners went through during those times and how it affected life, but also what actions are being taken now to try and revitalize the county, such as tourism,” Childers said.

To successfully document the county, Childers is asking the public to submit for consideration photos, videos, audio or personal statements for the documentary.

“After all, the people who live in Harlan County know it better than anyone else,” said Childers. “Society elsewhere still has its own idea of the county and people because of its past and we would like to use this opportunity to hopefully give a new aspect and outlook on the area and its people. We want to change any negative perceptions to positive ones.”

All submissions and releases must be received by March 15.

Items must be sent in by the owner and can’t be the original items due to the fact the items will not be returned.

If, for example, a video is sent of someone zip-lining, it must be a copy of the video and a release signed by the owner of the video and the participants seen in the video. Those involved in the project will receive their name in the credits of the film.
