The Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board will be upgrading online accessibility for area attractions with the help of a new computer application that will be available soon. The deal was made during a meeting on Wednesday.

“We got an app through the Harlan Daily Enterprise with Stephanie Collins,” said Board Chairman Dallas Gilbert. “It will be a free download, you just find our app and download it.”

Gilbert said the new service will be available through the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store and should be up and running in “about a month.”

According to Gilbert, the app will be compatible with most devices, including iPhone, iPad and Android.

“Just click on Black Mountain Offroader — or whatever we decide to call it, we’re not sure about the name yet. It will be a fantastic thing for the whole area. You can just click one button and it will give you all the information you’ll need to know and you can share all the information you need to share. We can upload anything we need to about our events and calender. I think it’s going to be a real asset to the park.”

The board also discussed an upcoming collaboration with the East Coast Off Road Racing Series.

“We’re working with ECORS to get our thing going at Verda Field for Memorial Day,” said Gilbert.

According to Gilbert, the board is hoping to have a celebrity on hand for the annual Southern Shine Crawl event.

“We have been in contact with Tim Smith from the Discovery Channel’s ‘Moonshiner’s’ show,” said Gilbert.

Gilbert said negotiations will be going through Smith’s agent.

“We’re trying to work on that and hopefully that will come in,” said Gilbert. “It’s a good show and everybody likes it. So, we’re trying to work up a deal with him and get him here for the Southern Shine Crawl.”

There is also a bicycling event in the planning stages.

“The last part of April, we’re planning our mountain bike race at the Black Mountain ATV Park, ” said Gilbert. “It’s the spring of the year and we’re getting ready to go.”
