A report of a stabbing late Monday resulted in Kentucky State Police arresting two people for falsely reporting an incident.

Gary Hoskins, 32, and Debra Ferrell, 47, both of Hulen, were arrested by troopers Josh Howard and Brandon Burton and charged with falsely reporting an incident.

According to the citation, Post 10 received a call stating Debra Ferrell had been stabbed on U.S. 119 at the Harlan/Bell County line and then drove to the BP at Coldiron (formerly the Coal Bucket). Debra Ferrell said she was sitting on the side of the road waiting on her son to use the bathroom when her ex-husband Jack Ferrell arrived and stabbed her. Debra Ferrell said Jack Ferrell was driving a red Chevrolet club cab pickup truck. There is an active EPO in Bell County between Debra and Jack Ferrell.

The citations show several KSP, Harlan Police Department and Harlan County Sheriff’s Office units as well as Harlan EMS responded to the scene. A search for the red Chevrolet club cab pickup truck allegedly driven by Jack Ferrell was initiated.

The citations state that after speaking with troopers both Debra Ferrell and Hoskins admitted they made up the story because Debra Ferrell was afraid of her ex-husband. Debra Ferrell stated she had seen Jack Ferrell drive by in a red Chevrolet pickup, but he did not stop. The search for Jack Ferrell was then called off.

Ferrell and Hoskins were lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

In other police activity, Kentucky State Police Trooper James Earl Hensley arrested James Middleton, 57, of Loyall, on Tuesday after an incident inside a residence in Loyall.

According to the citation, a “highly intoxicated” Middleton discharged a gun in a second floor bedroom of his residence. The shot went through the floor into the living room, which was occupied by Middleton’s wife.

Middleton was charged with second-degree wanton endangerment and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
