Evarts wins District 126 Governor’s Cup

Evarts Elementary School won top honors in the 2013 District 126 Elementary Governor’s Cup competition held recently at Green Hills Elementary School.

Cumberland Elementary finished second, followed by Black Mountain in third, Cawood in fourth and Green Hills in fifth.

Here are the results from the individual assessment areas:

Mathematics assessment: Michael Canterbury, first, Evarts; Caleb Whitehead, second, Black Mountain; Jamey Hughes, Black Mountain, and J.J. Ramsey, Cawood, tie for third; and Tristan Franklin, fifth, Cumberland.

Science assessment: Hailey Edwards, first, Evarts; Mekenzie Cornett, second, Cumberland; Angel Wynn, third, Evarts; Billy Fields, fourth, Cumberland; and Jace, Howard, fifth, Black Mountain.

Social studies assessment: Michael Canterbury, Evarts, and Wesley Howard, Cawood, tie for first; Nick Day, third, Cawood; Paighton Freeman, Evarts, fourth; and Zac Collett, Cumberland and Bridgett Craig, Cawood, tie for fifth.

Language arts assessment: Victoria Starrett, first, Evarts; Paighton Freeman and Kaylie Mefford, both of Evarts, tie for second; Lydia Wagner, fourth, Cawood; and Brenna Early, fifth, Cumberland.

Composition: Mady Haynes, first, Cumberland; Hannah Pittman, second, Black Mountain; Allicia Napier, third, Evarts; Hailey Blas, fourth, Evarts; and Kayla Couch, fifth, Cawood.

Arts and humanities assessment: Treyton Brock, first, Cumberland; Mady Haynes, second, Cumberland; Victoria Starrett, third, Evarts; Nikita Goodie, fourth, Evarts; and Evan Aslinger, fifth, Evarts.

Future problem solving: Evarts, first; Black Mountain, second; Cawood, third; and Cumberland, fourth.

Quick recall: Evarts, first; Black Mountain, second; Cumberland, third; and Cawood fourth.

Hume Sportsmanship Award: Cawood.

Winning students advance to the regional competition slated for March 23 at Arlie Boggs Elementary School in Letcher County.
