The Harlan County boys’ tennis team knocked off the Harlan Green Dragons 7-2 at the Dragons’ courts on Friday. The Bears avenged a scrimmage loss to Harlan earlier in the week.

The Black Bears swept the doubles matches, with top pair Caleb Bailey and Joey Eldridge besting Harlan’s Wes Farley and Boone Allison, 9-7. Harlan County’s Jacob Cornett and Jacob Raleigh defeated Green Dragons Trevor Pryor and Matt Simpson 8-5, while Ethan Hughes and Drayven Gist outlasted Logan Clark and Michael Simpson 9-7.

In singles action, Bailey defeated Farley 8-6, while Cornett took out Pryor 8-1. Nathan Halcomb beat Mike Simpson 8-2, and Harlan County’s Darek Skidmore edged Harlan’s Logan Murray in a tiebreaker.

Harlan’s Allison beat Eldridge 8-4, and teammate Matt Simpson won his match by the same score against Raleigh of HCHS.

“I’m very, very proud of this boys’ team,” said Harlan County coach Wes Bailey. “They have come a long way from last year and are still getting better.”

The Bears, winless a year ago, are now 2-0 on the season.
