A devout christian throughout his life, he was christened, confirmed and married in the First Presbyterian Church, Harlan. He served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in both Harlan and Frankfort. While in Chattanooga he became an Episcopalian and he served on the Vestry at Christ Church, Harlan. Late in life he worshiped as an Anglican.
Some of the positions he held were — president of the KY Chapter, American Academy of Family Physicians; vice-president, TN Chapter, Academy of Family Physicians; delegate from Harlan County and from Franklin County to the KY Medical Association; president, Harlan Co. Medical Society; president, Franklin Co. Medical Society; member, KY Geriatrics Society, KY Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and American Medical Association. A few of his other appointments were — Harlan Co. Board of Health, Mountain Heritage Hospice Advisory Board, KY Peer Review Organization, and GA-TN Regional Health Commission. In 1997 he was awarded Citizen Doctor of the Year by KY Chapter American Academy of Family Physicians. The Harlan County Chamber of Commerce recognized him for Community Service in Health in 2003 and in 2011 presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2008 he was inducted into the Harlan High School Hall of Fame. In his youth he was a Star Scout, Troop One, Boy Scouts of America, and during the 1950’s he was Scoutmaster of that same troop.
Besides his parents, Dr. Weiler was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Betty Fulton Weiler, and his son, Robert Carr Weiler.
Left to mourn him are his children, S. Logan Weiler, Jr. (Rhonda), Jayne Weiler Hendrickson (Steve), Charles Clay Weiler (Becky), and Paul Rowan Weiler (Kathy); his grandchildren, S. Logan Weiler, III (Sarah), Nick Weiler (Ashley), Adele Hendrickson Cornett (Pete), Stefan Hendrickson (Ty), Casey Hendrickson (Marcy), Laura Weiler Stevens (Colin), Suzanne, Robert and Patrick Weiler; great-grandchildren, S. Logan IV, Elise and Baylor Weiler, Caleigh, Kate and Cole Cornett, Caleb and Wyatt Hendrickson, and Hattie Stevens; his sister-in-law, Jayne Fulton Brock; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 15th, 2012 from 5:p.m. - 7: p.m. at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Celebration of his life will be Monday, July 16th, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Harlan.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY with Military Rites will being observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
