Kelly Howard, age 93, of Baxter went to his eternal rest and reward on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at his home. He was born on Greasy Creek in Leslie County on January 20, 1920 to Lloyd Howard and Florence Jackson Howard. He moved to Harlan County as a young boy and had lived here the rest of his life. Kelly was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served in Europe during WWII.

One of his earliest jobs was working in the coal mines. Later, he worked several years at Harlan Farmer’s Supply before starting his own business, Howard Heating and Air Conditioning, in 1968. Kelly was a member of the Poor Fork Church of Christ.

Of all his hard work and accomplishments, Kelly was most proud of his large family, and enjoyed the times when everyone could be together.

Kelly was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Tannie Witt Howard; his granddaughter, Amy Mangino; three brothers, Joe Howard, Isaac Howard and Edd Howard; and five sisters, Sudie Hoskins, Sarah Gray, Faye Short, Irene Lewis and Vida Marie Howard.

He is survived by his children: Jean (Jack) Barrier of Raleigh, NC; James (Susan) Howard of Harlan; Joyce Hardy of Marina del Rey, CA; Christine (Bobby) Burchette of Lexington; Donnie (Linda) Howard of High Point, NC; Annette (Paul) Mangino of Louisville; Fred (Rhonda) Howard, Debbie (Phillip) Dozier, Peggy (Allen) Haywood, and Michael (Pat) Howard, all of Baxter. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Earl (Geneva) Howard of Delaware, OH; Grant (Beulah) Howard and Elmer (Anne) Howard, both of Baxter.

Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7:30 pm Friday (Feb. 1) at Harlan Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 7:30 pm. Speakers will be Josh Haywood (Kelly’s grandson) and Wayne Howard (Kelly’s cousin).

Interment services will be held at 11 am Saturday at the Resthaven Cemetery chapel with grandsons serving as pallbearers. The Harlan Honor Guard will present Military Rites.
